How to Keep Your Goals on Track
If you are like most of us, you start the year setting several goals you look forward to achieving. But do you keep your goals on track?
Just like a lot of people, I often have a hard time keeping on top of the goals I set for myself. Whether it’s keeping my business moving forward or eating right, it sometimes feels like I’m paddling upstream. Since February is often when people start “giving up” on their resolutions, I thought I’d share a few of things that help me get back on track when I start to stray.
Evaluate if your goal is too big for the time frame. If you’re trying to remodel your kitchen and you’re trying to do it in a week, you may want to re-think your timeline.
Break down the project or goal into manageable sections. Like the old adage says: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” By breaking it into smaller parts, it will always seem more manageable.
Ask for help. Many of us think we need to shoulder the burden of our goal entirely by ourselves. Sometimes by adding your goal to a friend’s goal, it makes it more fun and significantly easier to do.
Give yourself a break! Many of us are too hard on ourselves. We talk ourselves into defeat. By doing that, we will surely confirm the defeat by letting it take over.
Just start. Most of my clients feel overwhelmed by their stuff, and they call us to organize and help make things better. Their most frequent comment is, “I don’t know where to start.” I think by starting ANYWHERE, progress happens. Personally, I like to start with the hardest part of the project, so the remainder feels easier.
You may still lose track of your goal, but keep trying. If you don’t think you can do it, no one else will either!Feel free to comment and share. Until next time – Keep It Simple!
