What You Need To Know When Letting Go

One of the most critical steps of the downsizing process is acknowledging that you are letting go. In my book "Downsizing The Silver Tsunami," you will find great help to help you process your grief.

Letting go of a lifetime of stuff, letting go of a home you have lived in for many years, letting go of a lifestyle that may no longer fit where you are now. And it will be a hard thing to do. Give yourself a minute to reflect and really acknowledge that this is the direction you want to go in.

That the life you led 20 years ago (or more) when you moved into this home is no longer the same life you live now. And it's good. Think about the memories, and acknowledge all the joys and sorrows of the time you lived here. And now you're moving on to a new adventure. You will meet new people, have new experiences, ups, and downs, and all the stuff that life brings. Think of it as a new beginning. And starting fresh is always a great place to launch from.

What if you're about to meet a new friend, or life partner, or be closer to family? That's exciting! What I mean by this is, your memories are with you, and just because you're not keeping all the trinkets and paperwork and furniture that you spent a lifetime collecting, doesn't always mean it's sad. Yes, you can cry, and yes it's OK to feel a loss. You are moving on in your life from a place you spent a long time. Many people don't consider "grieving" to be about the loss of a home, stuff, or a lifestyle. Still, it is a very real possibility that you may need some help getting past this.

If you just cannot get past the sadness, consider getting professional therapy that can help you manage your feelings of loss. Not everyone feels this way. I just wanted to take a minute to communicate that "loss of stuff" and "loss of lifestyle" are real losses, and you are correct if you feel sad or scared. And there is a next step and you're going to grow and feel excited about your new space and all the new things you're about to experience!!
