5 Areas to Organize in The Fall to Prepare for Winter

As the weather changes and the leaves start to turn color, we often forget about the things we need to prepare for during the Fall season. Since the outdoor maintenance season will be coming to an end soon, let’s start there and prepare for Winter.

Hoses & Gardening Supplies

Your hose shouldn’t be left lying around on the ground. Be sure to disconnect it before the first freeze and turn off the tap inside the house. Wrap it up around a hose reel or store it neatly in your shed or garage for the next season. Gardening tools should be cleaned, oiled, and put away — in a storage bin or on a shelf, never left in the dirt! Your gardening chemicals should also be properly stored for the colder weather ahead. They should be stored somewhere where it is temperature controlled otherwise they may go bad.

Patio & Lawn Furniture

We wish we could make the warmer weather last longer. But the cold weather is on the horizon, so it is time to put away your lawn furniture and other summer items. Invest in a small plastic storage bench or find a shelf in your garage or shed where you can neatly place any smaller items like cushions, sports equipment, and decorations. Any large items should be stored in a place that won’t hinder the use of your garage or shed during the winter months.

Prep Your Yard & Garden

Put down fall fertilizer in your yard and garden to keep them nourished throughout the winter. You may also want to do some trimming and pruning in your garden prior to the first frost, so your plants come back well next year. Fall is a great time to plant bulbs and split perennials or trade with friends for new varieties to enjoy next year. Don’t forget to check your shovels and service your snow blower before the first Winter storm so they’re ready to go when you need them. There are plenty of outdoor things to get done during fall, but don’t forget about the inside of your home! Over the course of the Summer, you’ve probably acquired essential items or switched out your wardrobe to accommodate the warmer weather. Now it’s time to look at what you actually need.

Swap out Summer/Spring Clothes for Fall & Winter apparel

If you’re like most of us, you probably don’t have enough space to store all your clothes in one closet, so swap out your warm weather garb for the things you’ll need during Fall and Winter. Be sure to put your Summer clothing in a good container that can be stored in a secondary closet or your basement or attic.

Kitchen Essentials

Believe it or not, there are items you use more often in Summer, in Fall, and in Winter. Take a look at the things you have been using and things you may need soon. Fall is full of baking projects, cider, donuts, oh and football! Get your tailgating supplies, turkey roaster, and any other indoor entertaining items ready for the season and put away items like Summer drinking cups, pool & beach plates. These can be stored in simple storage bins or on shelves in your basement for easy access should you need it for a beach party in February. We hope these tips help you get and keep things organized during the Fall season and prepare for Winter. Enjoy the weather, time with friends, and all the fun associated with the changing season. How do you prepare your Winter?
